Kim Sang-jo Questions Five Major Conglomerates on Will for Reforms

Director of the Fair Trade Commission Kim Sang-jo met with the management of the five major conglomerate groups including Samsung.

This was their second meeting since the first in June with four conglomerate groups.

Director Kim stated, "Their intent on reform seems suspicious" and announced his policy to investigate public welfare foundations and the holding companies of the conglomerates.

Director of FTC Kim Sang-jo met with the management of the conglomerate groups once again after four months.

This meeting was held with the same four groups - Samsung, SK, Hyundai Motors, and LG - from past June with Lotte added into the mix to make it five major conglomerate groups.

This meeting was a session for an intermediary checkup on the tasks assigned to the conglomerates by Director Kim, which are to be completed by the end of the year.

Director Kim had harsh criticism as he began his assessments.

He continued on pressuring the conglomerate groups by insisting that they should move forward faster with a more detailed strategy for the people to actually recognize changes.

He even revealed his detailed plans for investigations into the conglomerates and issued a warning.

The FTC has stated that it will investigate the operational status of all types of public welfare foundations operated by the conglomerates starting next month.

The investigation will look into the activities of the public welfare foundations that are receiving tax privileges to see if they are indeed conducting activities as they should according to the purpose of their foundation.

The FTC also announced that it will look into the profit structure of the holding companies as well.

It plans to look into the increase of profits through brand royalties and building rent instead of the dividends paid by the holding companies and to investigate whether the conglomerates assigned work to certain holding companies and such in the process of gaining profits.

Director Kim emphasized that although the conglomerates are somewhat changing, they still have a long way to go after the meeting ended.

김상조 공정거래위원장과 삼성 등 5대그룹의 경영진이 만났습니다.

지난 6월 4대 그룹과 회동한 이후 두 번째 만남이었는데요.

김 위원장은 "개혁 의지에 의구심이 든다"며 대기업 공익재단과 지주회사 조사 방침을 밝혔습니다.

김보윤 기자입니다.

김상조 공정거래위원장이 넉 달 만에 재벌그룹 경영진과 마주했습니다.

지난 6월 삼성, SK, 현대차, LG 등 4대 그룹 경영진과 만난 데 이어 롯데를 더해 5개 그룹과 만난 것입니다.

이번 만남은 김 위원장이 연말까지 내준 숙제를 어떻게 진행하고 있는지 중간점검하는 시간이었습니다.

김 위원장은 쓴소리를 날리며 평가를 시작했습니다.

그러면서 국민이 기업의 변화를 실감할 수 있도록 좀 더 세밀한 전략을 속도감 있게 진행해달라고 압박했습니다.

대기업에 대한 구체적인 조사계획까지 공개하며 경고하기도 했습니다.

공정위는 다음달부터 대기업들이 운영하고 있는 각종 공익재단의 운영실태를 전수조사하겠다고 밝혔습니다.

공익재단들은 세제혜택을 받고 있는 만큼 설립취지에 맞는 활동을 제대로 하고 있는지 들여다본다는 것입니다.

지주회사의 수익구조도 살펴보겠다고 예고했습니다.

자회사로부터 받는 배당금 대신 브랜드 로열티나 건물 임대료 등으로 수익을 올리는 실태를 살펴보고 이 과정에 일감 몰아주기 등의 문제는 없었는지 조사한다는 계획입니다.

간담회가 끝난 뒤 김 위원장은 기업들이 어느 정도 달라지고 있는 점은 긍정적이지만 아직 갈 길은 멀다고 강조했습니다.
