■ (3rd LD) 2 dead, 12 missing after fishing boat sinks off Jeju Island

JEJU -- Two people died and 12 others remained missing after a fishing boat sank off the southern island of Jeju on Friday, with a search under way, the Coast Guard said.

The 129-ton Geumseong was carrying 27 crew members -- 16 South Koreans and 11 foreigners -- when the Coast Guard received a distress call at 4:33 a.m. that the boat was sinking 24 kilometers off Jeju's Biyang Island.

■ S. Korea holds live-fire ballistic missile drills after N. Korean missile launches

SEOUL -- South Korea fired a Hyunmoo-II surface-to-surface ballistic missile into the Yellow Sea this week in a show of force after North Korea's recent series of missile launches, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said Friday.

The live-fire exercise took place Thursday in the western coastal county of Taean, 108 kilometers southwest of Seoul, days after North Korea fired short-range ballistic missiles Tuesday and a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) last week.

■ Self-proclaimed power broker appears before prosecutors

CHANGWON -- Myung Tae-kyun, a self-proclaimed power broker at the center of a growing political scandal, appeared before prosecutors Friday for questioning over allegations of receiving illicit funds from a former ruling party lawmaker in exchange for his assistance with her candidacy in the 2022 parliamentary by-elections in violation of political funding laws.

Myung, who runs a public polling agency, arrived at the Changwon District Prosecutors Office in the city about 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul at 9:40 a.m., saying he feels "embarrassed, ashamed and sorry" to the people for his "reckless" actions and words in the past.

■ Yoon's approval rating hits new low of 17 pct: Gallup poll

SEOUL -- President Yoon Suk Yeol's approval rating dropped further to 17 percent, marking the lowest level since he took office in May 2022, a poll showed Friday.

The survey, conducted by the polling agency Gallup Korea, showed that the positive assessment of Yoon's performance plunged 2 percentage points from the previous week, while his negative assessment reached an all-time high of 74 percent, up 2 percent from a week earlier.

■ S. Korea to honor U.N. veterans of Korean War in Busan ceremony

SEOUL -- South Korea will hold a commemorative event next week honoring fallen soldiers who fought under the United Nations flag during the 1950-53 Korean War, the veterans ministry said Friday.

The annual "Turn Toward Busan" event will take place at the U.N. Memorial Cemetery in Busan, 320 kilometers southeast of Seoul, on Monday, with about 800 people, including war veterans and their families from 20 nations, in attendance, according to the ministry.

■ Hyundai Motor's Genesis partners with Tate Modern for special art exhibition

SEOUL -- Hyundai Motor Group's independent luxury brand Genesis said Friday it has partnered with Tate Modern, a leading British modern art museum, as part of a company initiative to collaborate with leading global cultural institutions.

Genesis and Tate Modern will join hands to support "Genesis Exhibition: Do Ho Suh: Walk the House," a major survey exhibition of South Korean artist Suh Do-ho at the London museum from May 1-Oct. 19 in 2025.
