Ex-Seoul police chief to stand trial for bribery

SEOUL, Nov. 7 (Yonhap) -- A former chief of the Seoul police agency will stand trial for taking bribes from a local company in return for favors, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Goo Eun-soo, ex-commissioner of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, has been indicted on charges of bribery, abuse of power and obstruction of exercising rights, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office said.

He stands accused of receiving 30 million won (US$27,000) in kickbacks from the head of multi-level marketing company IDS Holdings in return for the promotion of two police officials in 2014. Goo led the Seoul police agency from 2014-2015.

He was arrested by prosecutors on a court warrant last month.

Goo has been standing a separate trial without detention over negligence charges regarding the use of excessive police force during a 2015 protest rally that resulted in the death of a farmer activist who was struck by a police water cannon.
