SEOUL, July 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korean business executive Chung Mong-gyu will run unopposed for the nation's top football job, the sport's national governing body said Tuesday.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) said Chung is the sole candidate for its presidential election set for July 21. The KFA said the deadline for candidate registration was 6 p.m. Tuesday, and Chung was the only person to submit his candidacy.

Chung can now seek his second term which will run through December 2020. He was elected as the 52nd president of the KFA in 2013 after edging out three others.

Chung, 54, is the chief executive of the construction firm Hyundai Development Co. He has previously been the commissioner of the K League, which governs professional football in the country. He is also the younger cousin of former FIFA Vice President Chung Mong-joon.

Chung resigned from his post last month to enter the election. Under the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) rule, the nation's top sports organization, an incumbent leader of its member organization must resign before its election committee is formed.

The KFA said the election will take place at its headquarters in Seoul on July 21. Under the rule, if there is only one candidate for the election, the nominated person must earn a majority of the votes of 106 electoral delegates.

Chung is also the chief of the South Korean athletic delegation for the Rio de Janeiro Summer Games.
