SEOUL -- South Korea unveiled a slew of its own punitive measures against Pyongyang Tuesday, including blacklisting scores of North Koreans and entities suspected to be linked to the North's weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

The set of measures is a follow-up to newly-imposed United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sanctions in response to Pyongyang's nuclear test in January and long-range rocket launch last month, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said.

SEOUL -- North Korea has stolen information from the smartphones of South Korean officials, Seoul's spy agency said Tuesday, the latest in a series of cyberattacks against South Korea.

North Korean hackers sent text messages to dozens of major South Korean officials to try to lure them into following links to malicious software, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) said.

U.N. committee urges Japan to stop disparaging remarks on 'comfort women'

GENEVA -- A United Nations committee has urged Japan to stop making belittling remarks on former "comfort women" and move to fully implement the bilateral agreement between Seoul and Tokyo that aims to resolve the long-festering issue.

The U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) released a report on Monday, calling on Japanese leaders and public officials to "desist from making disparaging statements" regarding the former sex slaves.

(LEAD) S. Korea, Britain agree to promote cooperation in culture industry

LONDON/SEOUL -- South Korea and Britain agreed Monday to fully support civilian exchanges among creative culture industries of the two countries.

Culture ministers from the two countries adopted a joint statement which called for continuous efforts to cultivate cultural startups both on the public and civilian levels during a related forum in London, according to the South Korean government.

(LEAD) Former sex slave embarks on U.S. campaign

SEOUL -- A former sex slave of Japan's military left for the United States on Tuesday to campaign for a proper resolution of the issue decades after the atrocity took place, a civic group said.

Gil Won-wok, 89, will take part in various events in Washington and New York to raise awareness for the issue and demand its "just" resolution, according to the Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan.

SEOUL -- South Korean drama "Descendants of the Sun" has collected more than 200 million views on iQiyi, the Chinese streaming website said Tuesday.

The first four episodes have garnered a combined 280 million views as of Tuesday, the website, which holds the distributing rights in China, said.

Hyundai, Kia rise to 4th in green car sales

SEOUL -- Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors Corp. emerged as the world's fourth largest in terms of sales of eco-friendly vehicles last year, industry data showed Tuesday.

According to the data compiled by the Korea Automotive Research Institute, a Hyundai Motor Group-affiliated think tank, the two South Korean carmakers sold a combined 73,592 eco-friendly cars including pure electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
